Madras IIT To Educate Underprivileged Children

For the past one year, about 700 children from underprivileged families, mostly Dalits, in Chennai and a remote village in Bihar are being imparted informal education by volunteers from the same community. The children, who were earlier averse to basic learning, are now showing incremental improvement and are able to read their regional language and English textbooks.

The Teaching Reading Project (TRP), a pilot initiative of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras, is changing the lives of these young minds.

Delhi govt to introduce nursery classes in Sarvodaya schools

The Delhi government is planning to introduce nursery and pre-primary classes in all 447 Sarvodaya schools under the Directorate of Education.

"There are 447 Sarvodaya schools under the Directorate of Education (DoE), out of which KG (pre-primary) class is being run in 404 schools. The department proposes to introduce nursery class in these schools and start KG class in the schools where the same is not  at present run," as per an official document.

West Bengal To Focus On Girls Education

The West Bengal government will be lay special emphasis on the progress and welfare of girl students, particularly those who belong to the economically weaker sections of society.

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, “We will give special focus on girl students and those coming from the economically weaker sections (EWS). The government will also look into excellence in education as well as employability of the passing out students.” Chatterjee was speaking at the 10th convocation of St Xavier’s College here today.

IISER students to work on LIGO Project

Students of physics from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, may get to train at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO), in the fifth year of their integrated programme.

The world's third advanced LIGO detector will be set up in India and it will be an important project in the field of fundamental sciences in the country.

Thailand’s Education Ministry to Launch English App

Thailand’s Education Minister Teerakiat Jareonsettasin said the Education Ministry will introduce a new version of an English-learning app in two months to boost vocational students’ English proficiency.




He said the app, Echo English V, with V standing for vocational, is specifically designed for vocational students. The app, which will be ready for free download in March, is being jointly developed by the Office of the Vocational Education Commission (Ovec) and the private sector, according to Mr Teerakiat.

India's first Indian Institute of Skills at Kanpur

In alliance with the Institute of Technical Education (Singapore), the Skill Development Ministry has decided to set up the Indian Institute of Skills. The country’s first Indian Institute of Skills was dedicated to the public of India, by the laying of the foundation stone, by Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister, just before delivering his speech at a rally in Kanpur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The idea of such an institute was conceived by the Prime Minister when he visited Singapore's Institute of Technical Education. 

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) stated in its report that this institute will have best practices inspired from the Singapore Institute, including its mode of training. A proposal has been made by the Union ministry to set up six such institutes across the country. A major part of the onus has been given to the state governments in implementing the scheme successfully.

SCERT launches online training programme for Teachers

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) launched a software named as ‘online in-service teacher capacity-building programme’ to help teachers attain an in-depth knowledge of their subjects. The main aim of the online programme is to enhance the teaching skills of the guest teachers. And the programme is aimed at training as many as 50,000 teachers.



According to the DNA report, the newly launched software will help as many 50 mathematics teachers and 70 mentor teachers working in different schools operating under the Directorate of Education in the first month.
